PC Thermal Issues

Kristen Hewes - Hardware Technician

This week I want to blog about something that happened to me, not a client. I am a gamer, a big one; I have loved games since I was a kid.  I own the big consoles and a couple of handhelds as well as an iPhone and an iPad.

My problem this week was with my laptop. I own a gaming laptop (if you can call something that big a laptop).  It is a beast of a gaming laptop, with an i7 processor, 8 gigs of ram and an aTi 5870m videocard in it.  As you can imagine, it puts out some heat. Well, this week I installed a couple of new games and when I booted one of them up, I got to the cinematics *poof* shutdown.

I did some testing and found that it was being caused by the GPU overheating. Now I take good care of my rigs and maintain them well, but upon opening the case to take a look I was disturbed to see the amount of dust and crud in there.

After a good blow out with some canned air I decided to get deeper and redo the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU. So it took the rest of the system apart and lo and behold the thermal paste they used was awful, it was not even paste, but thermal pads.

Well I was not impressed with that! So off it all came and was replaced with some Arctic Silver.

I love my laptop and it breezes through games, but why oh why not use good paste!!
